Overview

Begin your adventure with a visit to the Mira Aire Caves, one of Portugal's seven wonders.

Descend 100 meters (330 ft) underground, following a safe path with over 600 steps. Marvel at the stunning rock formations, illuminated by LED lights, and listen to the sound of rivers flowing beneath you. At the end of your visit, take a lift back to the surface.

Next, stop near the medieval castle of Porto de Mós, a tiny yet important defensive castle that was converted into a Renaissance-style palace. Take photos of the beautiful blend of medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, or go inside the palace for an even more historic experience of Portuguese history.

Finally, end the day at the magical Buddha Eden, which features beautiful gardens and one of the largest Buddha statues in Europe. Many different species have been found here, and in some rare cases, species for which, still today, only a single specimen has ever been discovered.

On one side, at Pedreira do Galinha, we can observe massive sauropod tracks 🐾 And here, at Pedreira do Vale dos Meios, dozens of theropod footprints appear in different shapes and sizes, revealing a dynamic and ancient landscape.

🏡 Perched on the mountainside, Monsanto is one of the most unique villages in Portugal.

This is not just a place built with local materials, it is a village carved directly into the landscape. Massive granite boulders 🪨 are not obstacles here, but part of the architecture itself. 🏛️ The Roman ruins of **Conímbriga** are probably the most impressive in Portugal.

At first sight, Belmonte Castle 🏰 looks simple, just a tower and walls that have survived the passage of time. But once you step inside the tower, something fascinating appears carved into the stones: dozens of medieval mason’s marks ✍️.

Far from Portugal’s crowded tourist trails stands a silent giant of stone.

Built nearly 2,000 years ago, Centum Cellas rises from the landscape like a forgotten riddle of the Roman Empire. We’re at the Church of Saint Francis in Évora, a place many visitors ask about for its majestic pipe organs.

Today, I was lucky to witness something rare — one of them being played.
This 18th century instrument, masterfully crafted by renowned Portuguese organ builder D. Pascoal Caetano Oldovino, was originally housed in another convent. It now fills in for the original organ of this church, which has been lost over time.

A moving reminder that history still lives and breathes here.

A Journey Through Time in the Heart of Alentejo

Thousands of years ago, life in what is now Portugal may have been much easier than in many other parts of the world. The Iberian Peninsula’s mild climate and abundant sunshine created ideal conditions for early human life to thrive

In 2014, archaeologists from the University of Lisbon made an extraordinary discovery in Aroeira: a 400,000-year-old Neanderthal skull, one of the oldest ever found in Europe. A powerful reminder of how deep the roots of human history go in this land

In the Alentejo region, that ancient past is still visible today. Near Évora, the Almendres Cromlech stands as one of Europe’s largest and oldest megalithic sites. Discovered by chance in 1964, this stone circle is thought to have been used for stargazing, ceremonies and ancient rituals. A place where history, mystery and nature come together 🌄

Not far from Almendres lies the Anta of São Brissos. With a different purpose from the cromlech, it served as a prehistoric burial site. It’s fascinating how humans tend to adapt old traditions into new cultural frameworks. What was once a sacred pagan monument was later transformed into a small Christian chapel, blending thousands of years of belief and symbolism into one unique and powerful structure ⛪

We were just starting our walk up the hill in the breathtaking Pena Park when someone spotted a rare sight...
Meet the Lucanus cervus, also known as the Stag Beetle, a true little warrior of the forest.

Despite their fearsome look, they’re completely harmless to humans. In fact, they have a fascinating and surprisingly romantic life story.

Their journey begins underground as a larva, feeding on rotting wood for one to three years, usually near the roots of oak trees. They grow through several larval stages and can even reach the size of a human finger.

Male stag beetles are known for their oversized mandibles, which they use to wrestle each other for tree sap, decaying fruit, and the best mating spots. To impress females and show dominance, they climb to the highest branches, putting on a true beetle showdown.

They may be slow runners, but when needed, they’re capable fliers. Long ago, people believed they were linked to the devil and brought bad luck to crops. But in truth, they’re peaceful creatures with one goal in mind: to find a mate during their short adult life, which lasts only one to four months.

After that, the male dies, and the female lays her eggs, continuing the cycle. A brief but beautiful chapter in the enchanted forest of Pena.
