Peninha Sanctuary
Nature
Sintra
Dica:
Peninha is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Sintra Mountains, but you will need your own transportation to get there. The sanctuary offers breathtaking panoramic views over Sintra, Cascais, Cabo da Roca, and the Atlantic Ocean.
This is one of those places where locals escape the crowds and reconnect with nature. Be prepared for a short but steep uphill walk to reach the highest point. Before visiting, always check the weather forecast, as fog is very common in this area. On some days, just like at Cabo da Roca, the views can completely disappear behind the clouds.
História:
Perched atop one of the highest points of the Sintra Mountains, Peninha has been considered a sacred place for centuries. According to local tradition, an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared here, leading to the construction of a small chapel that later became a place of pilgrimage.
The site gained further prominence in the early 20th century when António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, the owner of Quinta da Regaleira, commissioned the construction of the elegant PeninhaPalace nearby. Today, the sanctuary remains one of the most atmospheric and scenic locations in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
