Moorish Castle

The Moorish Castle offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Sintra. Unlike the nearby palaces, the experience here is more focused on nature and walking along ancient stone walls high above the mountains. Early morning or late afternoon visits are highly recommended for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Access to the mountain area can be challenging, so checking transportation and logistics in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season.

Built between the 8th and 9th centuries during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, the Moorish Castle was an important defensive fortress overlooking the Atlantic coast and the surrounding region.

After the Christian reconquest of Sintra in the 12th century, the castle gradually lost its military importance and was eventually abandoned, leaving behind one of the most impressive medieval landmarks in Portugal.
