Opened in 1998, theFado Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting one of Portugal’s greatest cultural traditions. Fado emerged in the popular neighbourhoods of Lisbon during the 19th century, blending influences from sailors, migrants, and urban life intoa unique style of music centred on longing, nostalgia, and everyday experiences.


In 2011, Fado was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, confirming its importance not only to Portugal but alsoto world culture. Today, the museum remains the best place to discover the history and evolution of this unique musical expression.
