Countess of Edla Chalet

Located around 40 minutes on foot from the main entrance, the journey itself becomes part of the experience. As you walk deeper into the forest, the crowds slowly disappear, revealing the peaceful side of Pena Park and the extraordinary landscaping vision created by King Ferdinand II after 1839.

After the death of Queen Maria II, King Ferdinand II experienced a period of deep sorrow, almost like a tragic love story. Some years later, during an opera performance, he fell in love with Elise Hensler, a famous singer of Germanic origins who later became the Countess of Edla.

Together, they created the charming Chalet of the Countess of Edla in 1869 as their summer retreat. The chalet combines French and Portuguese architectural influences and reflects the romantic spirit that shaped Pena Park itself.
