This is a tricky one. The panoramic views over Lisbon are spectacular, but many visitors leave expecting more from the castle itself. If your goal is simply to take photos, there are several free viewpoints across the city that offer equally stunning views. 

However, if you enjoy history, this site becomes a completely different experience. A knowledgeable guide is highly recommended, as the true value of São Jorge lies in its incredible historical significance rather than the remaining structures.

History:

Long before Portugal existed, the hill of São Jorge was already occupied by different civilizations, including Phoenicians, Romans, and Muslims, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in Lisbon. 

The castle we see today was largely developed during the Islamic period, when it served as the fortified citadel of the city and the centre of political, military, and administrative power. 

After the Christian conquest of Lisbon in 1147 by King Afonso Henriques, it became a royal residence and one of the most important sites in the kingdom. Few places in Portugal tell the story of so many civilizations in a single location.
