Located in the historic district of Belém in Lisbon, the Jerónimos Monastery is one of Portugal’s most iconic monuments, although it can feel overrated for some visitors due to high ticket prices and large crowds. While the interior visit can involve long queues and peak heat hours, the monastery church is free to enter and, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Portugal. The best experience often comes from visiting early or focusing on the exterior details and the surrounding area.

History:

Built in the 16th century, the Jerónimos Monastery is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture commissioned by King Manuel I to honour Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. It stands on the historic site where Portuguese explorers departed and returned during the Age of Discoveries.

Closely tied to Portugal’s maritime history, it reflects the wealth and global influence of the country during that era. Today, it remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Lisbon’s most visited landmarks.
