Lapa de Santa Margarida

Nature

Sintra

Tip:

Hidden within the cliffs of the Arrábida Natural Park, Lapa de Santa Margarida is one of the region’s lesser known treasures. Reaching the site requires a short walk and a descent through a narrow stone staircase carved into the rock, but the effort is well rewarded. Inside, visitors will find a small chapel built within a natural cave overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The combination of nature, history, and breathtaking coastal views makes this a memorable stop for those looking to explore beyond the usual tourist routes.

History:

For centuries, this sea cave has been associated with religious devotion and local legends. According to tradition, the chapel was established as a place of pilgrimage and contemplation, taking advantage of the cave’s natural shelter and dramatic setting above the ocean.

Locatedwithin the ArrábidaMountains, the site reflects the long connection between spirituality and nature that characterizes many of Portugal’s historic sanctuaries.
