Convento dos Capuchos
Convent / Monastery
Sintra
Tip:
Hidden deep within the forests of Sintra, the Capuchos Convent offers one of the most peaceful and authentic experiences in the region. Far away from the crowds of the main palaces, this secluded site is surrounded by nature and silence, making it ideal for visitors looking to discover the spiritual and natural side of Sintra.
Unlike many attractions in the historic center, this location is easily accessible by car and parking restrictions are usually not an issue, making the visit far more relaxed.
History:
Founded in 1560, the CapuchosConvent was built as a humble Franciscan monastery dedicated to simplicity and isolation from the outside world. The monks lived with very limited comfort, and many of the small rooms and corridors were covered with cork to provide insulation and maintain a close connection with nature.
Unlike the grand palaces of Sintra, the convent reflects a life of humility, meditation, and harmony with the surrounding forest. Today, it remains one of the most unique and atmospheric historical sites in the Sintra mountains.
