Convento de Mafra

Convent / Monastery

Sintra

Tip:

Just a short drive from Sintra, the Mafra National Palace is one of the most impressive monuments in Portugal and often far less crowded than expected. Its massive scale makes it ideal for visitors who enjoy architecture, history, and wide-open spaces. Don’t miss the basilica and the palace library, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

History:

Built in the 18th century by King João V, the Mafra National Palace was originally designed as a convent, basilica, and royal residence. Inspired by Baroque architecture, it became one of the largest palace complexes in Europe, reflecting the wealth and ambition of the Portuguese empire at the time.

The complex includes a basilica, royal apartments, a monastery, and an extraordinary library housing thousands of rare books. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage candidate and one of Portugal’s most remarkable historical landmarks.
