Belém Tower

History, Viewpoint

Sintra

Tip:

One of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, Belém Tower is best appreciated from the outside. While it is possible to visit the interior, it is quite small and often crowded, with limited value compared to the exterior views.

The real experience here is walking along the riverfront and admiring the tower’s unique position on the Tagus River, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light enhances its silhouette.

History:

Built in the early 16th century during the Age of Discoveries, Belém Tower was commissioned by King Manuel I as part of Lisbon’s river defence system. It served both as a fortress and a ceremonial gateway for ships departing on voyages of exploration.

Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a powerful symbol of Portugal’s maritime history and global influence during the Age of Discoveries.
