Archaeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas

Museum

Sintra

Tip:

If you have an interest in archaeology or Roman history, this museum is well worth a visit. Located in the quiet countryside of Sintra, it houses one of Portugal’s finest collections of Roman inscriptions, funerary monuments, and archaeological artefacts. The museum is modern, easy to explore, and provides excellent context for understanding the Roman occupation of the region.

History:

The Archaeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas was created to preserve the remarkable discoveries made in the surrounding area, where Roman settlements and cemeteries once flourished. Its collection includes one of the largest displays of Roman epigraphy in Portugal, alongside milestones, sculptures, and architectural elements dating from the Roman period.

The museum also presents artefacts from earlier prehistoric communities and later medieval occupations, offering visitors a journey through thousands of years of local history in one of the most archaeologically significant areas of the Sintra municipality.
